Daniel Roy is entering his third season as Head Coach of Men’s Ice Hockey and Director of Hockey Operations at GCU. Originally from Santa Rosa, California, Coach Roy began his college career with Santa Rosa Junior College in 2005. The team folded the following season, but Roy and other teammates rebuilt the hockey program at SRJC, where he played again during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Coach Roy moved to Arizona in 2012 when he transferred to Arizona State University to play goalie for their ACHA Division II team. He graduated from ASU in 2014 with a degree in Communication and became Assistant Coach for the team the following season. In his first season as Assistant Coach with ASU, the team qualified for their first ACHA D-II Western Regional, and during his second season, the team qualified for their first ACHA D-II National Tournament appearance.
In 2016, Coach Roy was offered the opportunity to build the ice hockey program at GCU from the ground up. GCU Men’s Ice Hockey finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 9 out of the 55 teams in the Western Region and qualified for their first D-II Western Regional appearance in just their second season. Coach Roy was named the “Coach of the Year” for the ACHA D-II Western Region for the 2017-18 season.
Coach Roy married his high school sweetheart, Emily, in 2015, and the two currently reside in Tempe. Coach Roy brings 20 years of playing experience and almost 10 years of coaching experience to the GCU Ice Hockey program. He is confident that his professionalism, drive for greatness and experience as a player and a coach, will foster the growth of ice hockey at GCU and in Arizona.
